Beneath Breathing
Beneath Breathing is a site-specific public projection that focuses on the unstable dynamics of influence between human and non-human life under changing water conditions, with particular attention to how the water quality around the Wild Mile has shifted through ongoing environmental interventions.
The reversed flow of the Chicago River has left a long-term impact on its ecosystem. As part of the area's ecological restoration efforts, local organizations have been planting native mussels to help filter the water and improve its quality. This process involves a wide range of interconnected ecological elements—including fish, water currents, algae, and sediment on the riverbed—alongside the inescapable presence of human activity.
By analyzing and editing underwater archive footage collected over the past two years in the Wild Mile, the artist transforms these images into an immersive visual narrative that calls for a renewed reflection on our relationship with aquatic environments.
